Not everyone is a great writer – and even if you can write reasonably fluently, it may not be something you enjoy. Does that mean you can’t write a book? Not necessarily.
If you’re a consultant you have probably generated a considerable amount of content over the years, for your website, your marketing material, proposals, plans, blogs, maybe video or podcast material and material for clients.
If you’re a speaker, you’ll have speeches you’ve delivered, maybe slide decks and handouts, possibly video recordings of your presentation.
If you’re a trainer, you’ll have workshop outlines and course material, and maybe video of you delivering your programmes.
This is all potential material to convert into a book. If you don’t want to actually write it, working with a good development editor will enable you to have some conversations and then let the editor take your material to shape and polish.
I’ve converted an ecourse into books. I’ve taken some speaking notes and developed them into half a book (the other half was written by the co-author). A series of blogs became a book. A series of one day training programmes became a series of books.
If you know a book will be a powerful marketing tool, don’t let a reluctance to sit down at a keyboard and write 40,000 words stop you. You just need to work with someone who gets your message and can develop your existing material into book form.
